BODFARI TO CLWYD GATE (A494) MAPS 6-12
This is a challenging 11-mile (18km, 5hrs 45mins-6hrs 30mins) section which involves crossing the first part of the Clwydian Hills (see box below). Leaving Bodfari, the first landmark of the day is Moel-y-Parc, the hill with the radio mast on top that remains in sight throughout this section, although your route takes you over the shoulder without visiting the summit.
You do top out on the next hill, Pen-y-Cloddiau, at 440m (1442ft). The site of an Iron Age hill-fort, with a flat top surrounded by the vestiges of earthwork defences, it’s the first of several hill forts on the walk through the Clwydian Hills, contouring round the broad shoulders of Moel Gyw and Moel Llanfair to the col between Moel Llanfair and Moel y Plas, where the road comes up from the peaceful village of Llanarmon-yn-Lal.
You leave the hills behind and follow field paths with some road walking until, at the River Alun, you find yourself among water meadows on the approach to the attractive village of Llandegla, arriving beside the church dedicated to St Tegla after whom the village is named.
