SAMPLE ROUTE GUIDE – CRANTOCK TO PERRANPORTH

CRANTOCK TO PERRANPORTH [MAPS 31-34]

The next eight miles (13km, 13/4-21/4hrs) provides diverse walking, with some leg-stretching ups and downs.

After heading off through the dunes from Crantock you come to Porth Joke, a beautiful beach made all the more delightful by the fact that no road runs to it. Kelsey Head with its huge expanse of green grass is a place to meander and dawdle.

Then it’s on past Holywell and through the more brisk and business-like military area of Penhale Camp. Out of season you’ll almost certainly be the only person walking on this part of the trail, and with the impersonal barracks and radar equipment to one side of you and the roaring sea to the other, it can all feel a little too remote and isolated.

The next stage is down to Perran Beach, a long stretch of golden sand busy with dog walkers, families, horse-riders and, if the wind is up, sand yachts whistling across the beach, which brings you to Perranporth.
